Wins the 2005 Haitian Heritage Month Essay Contest
The Haitian Heritage Month Celebration Committee is proud to announce that Roselie Louissaint is the winner of the 2005 Haitian Heritage Month essay contest. Roselie, an 11th grade student from John I. Leonard High School, has demonstrated outstanding thinking and writing skills in her composition, excelling in content, originality, grammar and spelling, according to a judging committee comprised of five district administrators and teachers. The essay topic was, “Who is your Haitian hero and why?”
Born in the United States from Haitian parents, Roselie is a high achiever very well appreciated by her teachers for always doing her best to excel. Besides her academic activities, she is captain of the Track and Field team, member of Mu Alpha Theta, the French Honor Society, and the Earth Club. Her career goal is to become a pediatrician.
Bianca Sheeba David, a 9th grade student from Atlantic Community High School, and Enol Gilles, a 12th grade student, from John I. Leonard High School, won respectively second place and third place.
The goal of the contest is to motivate students to do historical research about different ethnic groups and their contributions to the U.S. and world history. It aslo helps them practice their thinking and writing skills in order to increase their achievement level in high stake assessments like the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).
Other students won in a poster contest. They are, William Borja, an 11th grade student from Wellington High School, Shauvan Williams, a 4th grade student from Westward Elementary, and the art class students from Royal Palm School.
The winners of the essay contest will be recognized at the School Board meeting of May 18 at 5:00 PM. The first place winner will receive an award certificate along with a check of $150.00. The second place winner will receive a certificate and $100.00, and the third place winner a certificate and $50.00.
