On Monday, May 1, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz celebrated Brooklyn’s Annual Haitian Heritage event whose theme this year was “Re-affirming and Re-building.”
After offering congratulations and well wishes to Haiti’s new president-elect, Rene Preval Borough President Markowitz acknowledged the many contributions of Brooklyn’s Haitian community.
“Today we celebrate the success and unique flavor that Brooklyn’s Haitian community brings to our borough,” said Borough President Markowitz. “What would Brooklyn be without Haitian music, the beautiful Creole language, and of course, the thriving Haitian businesses that have made walking down a burgeoning street like Toussaint Louverture Boulevard, also known as Nostrand Avenue, feel like an island escape!”
Borough President Markowitz welcomed a powerful voice who has shared Haiti’s culture with the world, award-winning author and former Brooklynite by way of Port-au-Prince, Edwidge Danticat. Author of several critically acclaimed books and essays including Krik? Krak!, and a finalist for the National Book Award in 1995, Ms. Danticat returned to Brooklyn to celebrate Haitian Heritage at Brooklyn Borough Hall.
The Haitian flag proudly flies over Brooklyn Borough Hall all this week and Borough President Markowitz reminded all that in Brooklyn as well as Haiti “L’union fait la force” – “In unity there is strength” |
