Haitian Heritage Month: May 2007

Brothers and sisters,
The Haitian Heritage Month begins today with the goal to reach out all Haitians in Massachusetts. This time of year inspires us to count our historical and cultural gifts and share them to the world. Even though in miles we may be away our homeland, we must keep alive the pride of our ancestors. The Haitian- American Unity Parade has particular significance for us. It is the symbolism of the patriotism and unity for which our ancestors lived and died.
Personally, I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to HAU and the other Haitian organizations for their perseverance and their wonderful ability to get things done. Who would have guessed that the Unity Parade would grow to be the successful parade it is today?
May God, the Almighty, bless you all. May all Haitians enjoy the gift of unity, share it with others, and spread it everywhere.

Mes frères et soeurs Haïtiens,
Voilà déjà sept ans depuis que nous célébrons avec fierté le drapeau haïtien dans cette terre d'acceuil de Massachusetts. Bravo à HAU pour cette initiative qui a encore des difficultés à s'imposer dans l'esprit et dans le coeur de plus d'un. Le drapeau est le symbole de notre unité. Le drapeau est notre identité, nous devons en être fiers, nos ancêtres ont versé leur sang pour nous le procurer. Je me rappelle encore de ce sentiment patriotique qui régnait en Haïti, au cours de mon adolescence, à la préparation des fêtes du 1er et du 18 Mai. C'était l'affaire de tout le monde.
De nos jours, en Haiti et surtout dans la diaspora, malgré les efforts déployés, on a grand peine à rallumer cette flamme patriotique d'antan. Pourtant c'est notre responsabilité d'éduquer nos enfants et nos jeunes au civisme, à la fierté historique et culturelle de notre chère Haïti.
En cette commémoration du Mois de l'Héritage Haïtien, je veux vous exhorter à vous unir sous la bannière de nos valeureux Ancêtres pour un nouveau depart. Que Dieu vous bénisse tous. Que Dieu bénisse Haïti.
